Y’all know my financial situation and how I’m trying to get myself out of $20,000 worth of debt. Having a full-time job is definitely a blessing, and I have a little extra spending money to pay towards my debt each month, but I want to do more so I can get out of debt earlier than my 27th birthday in 2019.
I’ve been thinking and praying about it for a while, and I’ve decided a second job (also known as a side hustle) is the way to go. I don’t want to work just anywhere though. It has to be somewhere I’m going to enjoy, because working 15-20 hours a week on top of a 40 hour regular job is going to be mentally and physically exhausting.
When you ask God for a prayer, He answers in His own way. Back in January I applied at LifeWay Christian Bookstore, but they weren’t hiring at the time. I tried to re-apply in June, when I had only the part-time HR job. After my HR job became full-time, I got an email from LifeWay saying they had an opening and wanted to interview me. I interviewed with them, and a few days later I had a voicemail saying they wanted a second interview. I called back only to discover they literally just filled the position…. but they would have a second part-time position open in a few weeks.
I walked into the second interview to pretty much be offered the job. The store manager’s exact words were “I’d recommend going into work on Monday and asking for approval for a second job.” You see, my current employer’s President/CEO must approve all second jobs, to make sure we’re not competing with the company. I knew that portion wouldn’t be a conflict, but being a professional staff member asking for a second job had me worried. I was afraid I wouldn’t be approved. Thankfully I explained my reasoning to the HR Director, and she told the President I had a great reason that she approved of, and they granted me permission.
I’ve been working on new hire paperwork for LifeWay (which is exactly what I do everyday in my first job!) and should be starting within the next couple of weeks. They already know about my trip to Gatlinburg as part of the Renew Retreat and they said they were okay with it. (It’s a Bible-filled weekend, after all! How could LifeWay say no!)
It’s going to be a little rough to go from 8-5 workdays to working 7-4 at my first job and 4:30-8:30/9:30 at my second (plus working all day on Saturday) but I think once I get the hang of it, I’ll be okay. I will probably only work 3-4 days a week at LifeWay. The blessing of working for LifeWay is I’ll definitely have every Sunday off!
I’m so excited to be not only have a second job and get myself out of debt, but that it’s with a Christian organization whose values I believe in. I’m so glad my second job will be having an eternal impact on lives.
