As most of you know, I’ll be moving back to Owensboro upon graduating college. I didn’t realize it at the time, but there were so many local places that I’ve missed while I’ve been away at college. I can’t wait to visit them all again!
I have to admit, I’m a bit biased about supporting small businesses because my great-uncle owned a local BBQ restaurant for decades until he retired. Why spend your money supporting a giant corporation when you can use it to support someone in your community? I got to see first-hand how supporting local businesses helps people in my community, and that’s why I choose to shop local whenever I can. I urge you to keep your money local!
What are my favorite local businesses?
The Rolling Pin Bakery. I’ve been going to this bakery for years; they have the best chocolate cake donuts ever. It’s a tradition for me to swing by the Rolling Pin on my way back to Murray.
The Ivy Trellis floral shop. A family friend works there, so it’s always my favorite place to order flowers. I ordered a boutonniere for my junior prom date and it was wonderful! My family has also sent and received flowers for funerals from the Ivy Trellis; the floral arrangements are made with such care.
Old Hickory Bar-B-Q. Owensboro is known for its BBQ (specifically mutton.) The most famous is Moonlite (President Clinton ate there once!) but I prefer Old Hickory. It’s one of those places only the locals tend to know about… well until it ended up on the Travel Channel! That reminds me of all the parish picnics in the summer.
Pizzaroma. They have the best pizza ever. It’s a little pricier than Pizza Hut but well worth it. My sisters and I were even in their commercial once!
The Big Dipper. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to eat a burger and drink lemonade outside at the Dipper. (Sometimes I take my food to the park.) In the winter, I love to stop by for some chili.
C-ing Polkadots. It’s a cute little boutique downtown that sells cute gifts, furniture, and home decor. I bought an adorable breakfast-in-bed tray for my friend’s wedding and she loved it!
