I have to share about one last Sound of Music site before I finish this blog post series.
Schloss Leopoldskron was used in the backyard scenes at the von Trapp home (the baroness sitting on the terrace, the scene where Maria dances on the terrace with Captain von Trapp, and, of course, the lake scene.) Although the interior ballroom scenes were filmed in a studio, the studio was a replica of the palace’s Venetian room. Today, the castle is a private hotel and therefore not accessible to the public.
There’s a nice walking trail around the outskirts of the castle that is open to the public, though, so we enjoyed a lovely late-afternoon stroll. Across the road is a stream – actually, it’s a series of canals called the Almkanal – that locals swim in on hot summer days. We contemplated swimming in it, but it was chilly!
On the backside of the walking trail, you can see the lake and exterior of the castle. Beware of the evil ducks though: they chased Drew and me. I may have attempted to use my stroller as a shield to stay away from them… the stroller my toddler was sitting in. Clearly, I’m not trying to win “mom of the year” over here, haha!
I would have loved to stay the night at Schloss Leopoldskron, but traveling with a toddler ruled that out. Maybe someday in the future, though!
ONE blog post to go before I finish talking about our trip to Salzburg from 4 months ago.
