Schloss Frohnburg
The front of the von Trapp family home, it’s seen in the scene when Captain von Trapp yanks the Nazi flag off the house. It’s now housing for university music students and supposedly no trespassing is allowed, but some kind Austrians saw us admiring it from afar and told us to go take a picture in front of it. Well I mean when the rule-following Austrians suggest we do something, then who am I to disappoint? 😉

Schloss Hellbrunn
Schloss Hellbrunn wasn’t used during The Sound of Music filming but its garden now houses the gazebo from the “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “Something Good” scenes. Those scenes were originally shot at Schloss Leopoldskron, but after filming concluded the producers gifted the gazebo to the city of Salzburg. It was moved to Schloss Hellbrunn to be more accessible to visitors and locals, as Schloss Leopoldskron is a private hotel.
Of course, we had to get our photo in front of the gazebo! Sadly the doors are locked, so I couldn’t spin around like Liesl. Funny story about this photo: there was a university music student having professional photos taken of her and her clarinet outside of the gazebo, so we patiently waited for our turn… Except, “patiently waiting” is kind of hard to do when you have a toddler! Finally, they realized what we wanted and asked us in broken English if we wanted to take photos there. They moved to a different side of the gazebo so we could have a space to take photos. By this point, Drew was incredibly grumpy and so we quickly set up the tripod, grabbed one shot, and bailed. Of course, my tripod was slightly off-center so the gazebo appears crooked. Oh well. Thank goodness I’m not an Instagram influencer or anything!
Schloss Hellbrunn was a day palace for the Prince-Archbishop, and as such, has no bedrooms inside. The “trick fountains” are really neat from what I’ve read; we tried to do the trick fountains tour, but missed it by ONE minute. Le sigh, rule-following Austrians. (In our defense, it was impossible to find the ticket booth to even buy the tickets.) Nonetheless, the gardens are really cool to walk around. Drew decided to toss his toy car into the pond to lure the fish over to him… I swear y’all, he keeps us on our toes!
And keeping with my theme of The Sound of Music sites in Salzburg, I have one more castle to share about + one more activity and then I will finally be finished recapping our Austria trip!
