In our few hours in the community of Ocho Rios, we never once felt unsafe. The rumors that everyone wants to sell you drugs weren’t true in our case, as we were only approached once. After we firmly said “no” and continued to walk away, the seller left us alone. We didn’t take anything expensive with us in the city and left it all locked in our hotel safe. We kept only a small amount of cash with us, the amount we knew we wanted to spend on souvenirs, and left the rest in the safe as well. In addition to being a deterrent for crime, it helped us stay within our spending limit! But the number one reason I felt so safe in the city was because my husband. As a soldier, he’s been to dangerous places and knows how to take care of himself. I knew he would take care of me, too.
Andy and I are both really glad we went shopping in Ocho Rios because we got to see some of the real Jamaica, instead of just the tourist spots and resorts.
Oh, and we also found a KFC. I wish we had stopped to eat there, because I’m curious if their chicken is the original flavor or a spicy flavor like jerk chicken.
Have you traveled to a place that people say is unsafe?
