Once we knew Baby Cummins was on the way, we knew immediately what Baby’s name would be if he were, indeed, a “he.” We also picked a girl’s name, but we were less sure about that choice; in the weeks leading up to Drew’s birth, I began considering other girls’ names. Thankfully, we didn’t have to decide if our girl’s name was the right one 😉 Throughout the pregnancy, I felt so sure that Baby was a boy that I called him by our boy’s nickname, Drew. I was thrilled when Baby Boy Cummins arrived, and we immediately began to call him by name after he was born.

Andrew Richard.
Andrew: Greek name meaning “manly, brave.”
Richard: English name with Germanic roots meaning “brave ruler.”
As most people have noticed, Andrew is named after my husband, who is also named Andrew. To make things a little less confusing, we gave him the nickname of Drew, while my husband continues to go by Andy. Family and close friends have given Drew their own nicknames, including Junior (even though Drew is technically not a junior since his middle name is not the same as Andy’s) and AJ (as in “Almost Junior.”)
Drew’s middle name is Richard. It was the name of my beloved Papaw, who passed away on my 14th birthday. Papaw was the most important male figure in my life, and he, along with my Mamaw, helped my mom raise my sisters and me after her divorce. I could go on and on with stories about Papaw. Still, I’ll summarize my thoughts by saying that I hope Drew displays the same character qualities that Papaw had: joy, patience, peace, kindness, hardworking, and an understanding of the importance of education, to name a few.
Originally I wanted to name our baby Richard Andrew, but given our last name of Cummins, we decided against it as it sounds a bit inappropriate. (Although Papaw would have found it amusing, he also wouldn’t want us to do that to our poor child 😜) So, Andrew Richard it is.
{When we were in Hawaii on our babymoon, we took a photo at Pyramid Rock Beach with our top boy’s name and top girl’s name for Baby’s nursery.}
To make things even more confusing, my husband and son have the same initials (my husband’s middle name is Ralph.) But I couldn’t imagine not naming my son after the two most important men in my life.
